A properly functioning DPF (Diesel Particle Filter) and Exhaust system is essential to your vehicles performance. It is a complex system where the main components are Exhaust Manifold, Oxygen Sensor, Exhaust Pipes, DPF or Catalytic Converter and Muffler. If any part of the exhaust system is faulty, you are at risk of being exposed to dangerous gases. All new diesel vehicles sold in Ireland since September 2009 are fitted with a DPF filter. A blocked DPF will result in a loss of Power and will put your vehicle into Limp Mode.
A flashing DPF light on your dash will indicate that you need to drive your vehicle for approx. 10 minutes at a speed above 70kmph to allow your DPF to complete an active regeneration cycle. If you fail to perform this your DPF will get blocked leading to costly repairs. It is good practice to drive your vehicle on motorways at least once per week to allow your DPF Regen. If your vehicle fails to Regen and your Engine Management Light is on you should bring your vehicle to the garage for a forced Regen or DPF clean.
