Pre-NCT Check
The NCT is a compulsory car inspection test in Ireland. All cars over 4 years old must undergo the test every 2 years. All cars over 10 years old must be tested every year. The primary aim of this testing is to improve road safety and enhance environmental protection by reducing harmful vehicles emissions in Ireland.

The biggest reasons for failing are issues with Front Suspension, Lights, Brake Lines/Hoses, Mechanical Brake Components and Steering Linkage. (NCTS)

TIPS for passing your NCT Test
- Check your Car has Adequate Engine Oil and Water Level.
- The Boot Should be Empty, and your Vehicle is Clear of all Valuables and Personal Belongings
- Vehicle Must be Clean Inside and Out.
Especially the Underbody - The Wheel Hubcaps Need to be Removed
(Wheel nuts must be visible) - Tyres Must be in Good Condition and Inflated to the Correct Pressure
- The Engine Should be in a Fit State
- Fasten All Seat Belts and Ensure Clips are Fully Visible (including rear).
- Have your Lights Checked
How Often
The regularity of the test depends on the age of your car.
- 0-4 years old there is no requirement to be tested.
- For cars over 4 years and less than ten years old, then you must take a test Every 2 Years.
- For cars over 10 years, but less than 30 years old, then you must take a test Every Year.
- For cars between 30 and 39 years old and you are not using it for commercial purposes, then you must take a test Every 2 Years.
